Defining style: six bloggers talk fashion

What does ‘style’ really mean?

Defining style on with love, b

“Fashion changes but style endures” – Coco Chanel

A wardrobe full of clothes and nothing to wear. Throwing on four outfits and still not being completely happy with the outcome – that’s me. I’ve always been interested in clothes, but don’t feel I’ve really defined my own personal style. I look back on outfits I’ve worn a few years ago and shudder – does this keep on happening as we grow older? My mother always used to say “it’s not a fashion show”. I hated these five words with a passion. But now they’ve given me some food for thought, although probably not in the way she intended! I’ve been reflecting on the meaning of style and have reached out to five other bloggers for their thoughts.

Fashion vs style: “It’s not a fashion show”… or is it?

This reminds me of a scene in The Devil Wears Prada, where Meryl Streep tells Anne Hathaway:

“you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back…it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff”

However brutal this scene was, it’s pretty true. We make a conscious choice about what we wear (yes, we can’t all afford Prada, but you know what I mean) and how we choose to express ourselves to the world. And it’s if, how and when we choose to interpret fashion that, in my opinion, creates style. For instance, a friend of mine dresses in 1950s attire, often vintage dresses and skirts, which were once in fashion, but probably not considered modern fashion today. Yet, it’s her, an expression of her interests and personality. And isn’t that the best thing about style? That it makes us individuals?

Finding individualism in blogging

In our world driven by social media and cookie-cutter Instagram profiles, there’s a lot of pressure to conform to a certain style as a young woman and blogger. It’s great to take inspiration from each other, but I really love those who stay true to their individual style.

I’ve reached out to a few fashion bloggers, who I think have great personal style, to hear about their thoughts on the subject. I absolutely love their answers and how different they all are! Definitely go and check out their blogs, too.

Fashion Blogger Q&A

Liz from Call Me Liz

Style Q&A - Call Me Liz

“I’m a petite fashion blogger over at Call Me Liz. When I’m not blogging (or shopping), I work full time as a digital content editor in beautiful Warwickshire. If you haven’t guessed already, I’m a bit of a shopaholic and have an eye for finding bargains online and on the high street.”

1. What does style mean to you?

“When I was much younger I lacked confidence and never thought I would be interested in fashion, but then as I got to 16 I found that I loved reading fashion magazines and looking at what the celebrities were wearing, I was inspired and thought I want to show off clothing like that! Before going to university to study fashion marketing I knew everyone was going to have their own unique style and it was like starting a fresh, at university I could be whoever I wanted to be.

That’s exactly what style means to me, you choose what you put on, how you wear your hair etc and I’m proud to be the person I am and how I look. I feel more confident when I step out in MY own style that reflects my choices.”

2. How would you describe your own personal style?

“I would describe my style as pretty and feminine, I love to wear lots of different colours and prints especially florals for Spring and I am addicted to buying dresses! You should see my wardrobe! I would say as I’ve hit my mid twenties, my confidence has grown and so have my clothing choices, I love to experiment and I feel that my style has matured. I’m certainly inspired by other bloggers and I often see something I love on someone and think “I’m going to find that”… but I always find a way to do it cheaper. I love finding bargains!”

3. What’s your favourite item of clothing/accessory and why?

“This is a tough one as I have so many to choose from! But I’m going to go for my Warehouse jeans, I have worn them to death and the main reason I love them? They are so comfy and casual, I can wear them with anything and no matter which top I wear with them they always look completely different.

After owning them for so long I’m often surprised that I still get compliments on them now!

And guess how much they were? £10! I’ve definitely got my money’s worth.”

Kelly from Velvet and Vibranium

Style Q&A - Velvet and Vibranium

“I’m Kelly, a fashion blogger from South Africa, who can’t wait to be done with her literature and French degree! I own way too many lipsticks, and an obscene amount of faux fur.”

1. What does style mean to you?

“Style gives us the opportunity to express ourselves on a daily basis. It’s a way of showing the world who we are, based on how we present ourselves. In the case of music/book/film merch, it can even show the world the things we love at a glance.”

2. How would you describe your own personal style?

“I’d like to think my style is fairly classic, with quirky and vintage elements thrown in.”

3. What’s your favourite item of clothing/accessory and why?

“I think maybe my over-sized denim jacket, because it goes with literally everything. It makes casual outfits look more put together, and easily dresses down fancier pieces.”

Courtney from Miss Sophia Blog

Style Q&A - Miss Sophia Blog

“My name’s Courtney from Miss Sophia Blog. I write about fashion, beauty and lifestyle. My life revolves a lot around coffee, unused stationary and aesthetic.”

1. What does style mean to you?

“Style to me is a way of telling people who I am without speaking. It’s a projection of how I feel that day, grunge is grumpy, bold bright colours are happy. It’s a way to have fun with clothes and add to your personality, for example, I like approaching people with tattoos and odd hair colours because they’re often the open minded ones that have interesting opinions on things. Style is a representation of who you want people to think you are.”

2. How would you describe your own personal style?

“Messy. I don’t have a set style unless my emotions throughout the day can be considered a style. I like to dress to suit my mood so there’s a mixture of grunge when I’m having a rough day, vintage if I’m in the mood to go sit in some little coffee shop and write for the day or a kind of Instagram style when I go about an average day in an average mood. I don’t want to tie myself to one style because there are so many to choose from and I like dabbling in a little bit of everything!”

3. What’s your favourite item of clothing/accessory and why?

“Chokers. I just think they’re kind of timeless and you can get loads of different types, chunky ones for that tumblr look, tattoo chokers to punk up any outfit, thin chain chokers to add a little class to an outfit. They’re just an easy way to touch up you daily look.”

Aqy from Skinny Decxf Latte

“I’m Aqy, a 25 year old fashion and lifestyle blogger from Singapore. I love dressing up a lot, and matching my outfits with colourful makeup too. I find my style inspirations from literally anywhere – be it from a book, movie, or even from a random person on the street!”

1. What does style mean to you?

“Style means being in my element, showing that I’m able to show my personality through the way I dress.”

2. How would you describe your own personal style?

“I don’t know what exactly my style is, but my friends have described it as quirky.”

3. What’s your favourite item of clothing/accessory and why?

“My favourite item of clothing is a leather jacket as I find it versatile, I can match it with pretty much everything else I wear.”

Emily from Emily Bashforth

Style Q&A - Emily Bashforth

“I’m Emily, a seventeen year old from not so sunny England. On my blog, I write about anything and everything from beauty to politics and from celebrities to fashion, from mental health to music and from food to films!”

1. What does style mean to you?

“Style is such an ambiguous word to me so it would be difficult to define it. To me, style is whatever I or anyone else wants it to be. It’s personal. Style is individual and has a different meaning depending on who is using it. The definition of style doesn’t have to relate to the latest catwalk trends or looking fresh off the runway. Style, for me, is simply about expressing yourself. It’s a way of showing off your personality and who you are through what you wear. The definition I attach to style may completely juxtapose that of every single person I pass in the street, which I think is fantastic. The beauty of style is the fact that there isn’t a true meaning to it and it can be whatever you want it to be. Personally, style makes me think of creativity, expression, freedom and versatility. Your style is YOU.”

2. How would you describe your own personal style?

“It’s difficult for me to describe my own personal style because I never feel as though I fall into one category and the pieces in my wardrobe really vary. I’d love to say that my style is whatever I want to wear but, realistically, there are a bunch of things I’d love to try but never have the confidence to wear because they’re so different to what people are used to seeing me in. (Note to self: step outside your comfort zone every once in a while). That being said, when shopping, I just pick up what I like. Although my clothing collection doesn’t really have a ‘theme,’ I love anything preppy and slightly collegiate, as well as vintage items or just anything a bit abstract like a good printed shirt. I tend to stay clear of sportswear and super casual clothing, as well as all black ensembles, as I don’t feel like they’re a reflection of me. I also don’t really follow the latest trends because 1) I can’t be bothered and 2) I just do my own thing and wear what I feel comfortable in depending on my mood.”

3. What’s your favourite item of clothing/accessory and why?

“As previously mentioned, I love a printed shirt so perhaps one of those would be my favourite clothing item (paired with a pair of skinny jeans and I’m good to go). Although, I do also love a black fedora hat, a pair of black boots because they go with everything, and my denim jacket because it makes me look way cooler than I actually am. My most prized item of clothing would probably be my Wildfox sweater because it cost and arm and a leg.”

I really hope you’ve enjoyed reading this Q&A as much as I enjoyed putting it together. How amazing are these bloggers and their answers? They’ve definitely left me feeling inspired! And most importantly they remind us that:

“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself” – Coco Chanel

It’s a LOT more fun to be the person you want to be, than follow the crowd.
